Bluebirds Protect Home w/o Mueller

Questions surrounded tonight's match-up between the Highlands Bluebirds and the Dixie Heights Colonels. The Bluebirds were heading into battle without head coach Dale Mueller who is now halfway through his two game suspension.

The Bluebirds left no doubt that they will once again be the team to beat in Northern Kentucky. They easily defeated the visiting Colonels 35-0 behind the speedy running of senior Michael Schrode.

Schrode carried the ball 14 times for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns, the Bluebirds started their season the same way they want to finish it, with a win.

“Every year we want to win the state championship,” Schrode said. “Starting with a win gets us off on the right foot and hopefully we’ll stay that way.”

Schrode led the Bluebirds in rushing yards for the game and did it in only three quarters of play.

The Bluebirds finished the night with 305 yards rushing and 102 passing. The air attack was split between senior quarterbacks Chad Hudepohl and Chase Cecil.

Schrode scored the game’s first touchdown. That score turned out to be all the home team needed for the victory. The defensive coordinator Brian Weinrich’s defense picked up where it left off last season when it shutout six of its opponents. Tonight, the Bluebirds’ defense held the Colonels to only 53 yards at halftime.

Weinrich took over head coaching duties tonight while Mueller is serving his suspension.

Weinrich said: "Honestly, this was a team effort. Not to sound like a cliche, but, we played at least 40 guys in the game tonight and they all did their job when we asked them to."

Unfortunately for Tom Spritzky’s Colonels, they fell to the Bluebirds in back-to-back years after getting their first victory against Highalnds in almost 30 years in 2002.

Things don’t get any easier for the Colonels next week. Dixie will play in the “Battle of the Colonels” when they play host to the Covington Catholic Colonels. First-year head coach John Rodenberg will get his first test against Coach Spritzky's colonels.

The Conner Cougars will put their regular season win-streak on the line when they visit the Bluebirds. With the graduation of quarterback Trevor Stellman, it will be a tough task.
