Tigers have trouble handling ball, quarterback
9/2/2005 - by Jake Donelan
Bellevue, KY - Bellevue, KY – It didn’t take long for the Indian Hill Braves to play spoiler to an optimistic Bellevue Tigers team that has started the season with two straight wins.

Bellevue, who has opened the season by leading all Northern Kentucky teams in scoring with a total of 95 points in two contests, but fell to the Braves 48-20 at Gilligan Stadium.

The right arm of the Braves' senior quarterback Mike Scherpenberg had plenty to do with the demise of the Tigers. The first play from scrimmage was a 62-yard strike from Scherpenberg to senior receiver Jake Kendell for the game's first score just 10 seconds into the first quarter.

The Braves got the ball back quickly after recovering a fumble deep in Tigers' territory. The Braves' then caught the Tigers defense on a blitz and set up there second score in as many plays when Scherpenberg hit running back Case Cousino with a screen pass. Cousino took the pass 20 yards untouched to the endzone.

Turnovers were a key in the seemingly uncharacteristic lack of offense for the Tigers tonight. They put the ball on the ground seven different times and lost possession on four of those.

After throwing for 337 yards and 4 touchdowns last week, Scherpenberg picked up right where he left off. By halftime he was 12-14 with 255 yards and three touchdowns.

Scherpenberg finished 19-27 for 396 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He hit five different receivers. His favorite target was Jake Kendell who caugth 9 passes for 157 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Despite the score, Bellevue had a bright-spot in senior running back Lincoln Adams. Adams finished the game with 247 all-purpose yards. He gained 104 yards on 11 rushes and had 138 yards on 6 kickoff returns.

Next week Bellevue will try to get back on the winning side of the scoreboard as they travel to the banks of the Ohio River to take on the Ludlow Panthers.
