Raiders run over Holmes
9/23/2005 - by Nathan Eten
In a game that looked like a great match-up on paper ended up being a blow-out tonight in Covington, Ky, as the Ryle Raiders (3-2) dismantled the Bulldogs (3-2) from Holmes. Holmes coming off of a big win last week (42-12) against Conner couldn't keep their winning streak alive much to the thanks of a tough Ryle defense and their many talented offensive players.

Early in the first quarter Ryle's offense guided them to the redzone, where they wouldn't come up empty. It came off of a fumble in the endzone by RB Scott Gray, which ended up being picked up by Ryle WR Tim Desjardin. With an Uminger extra-point that made it 7-0 Ryle. Ryle then stopped Holmes on their first drive and brought the ball back into the redzone, but this time had to settle for a Ross Uminger field goal from 33 yards out.

After the rains fell earlier today both teams knew that it was going to be hard to throw the ball, so Ryle stuck with the running attack all night long and it was very effective. The next TD would be scored by Ryle FB Vince Murray and that made it 17-0 Ryle in the second quarter. This time Holmes would answer back however with a 5 yard TD pass from their QB Duran Jefferson to WR Austin Hill, Ryle 17, Holmes 7. So it looked like Holmes would fight until the end in this one, but after this, it was all Ryle. Vince Murray and Scott Gray were unstoppable on the ground gaining 234 yards combined. Gray had 103 yards on 20 carries and his counterpart Murray had 131 yards on just 11 carries. Drew Morgan another running weapon for Ryle had 79 yards as well. Ryle gained a total of a staggering 384 rushing yards compared to Holmes' 97.

Uminger would have another FG late in the third and Murray would score his second TD of the game to take the score to 27-7. The Raiders took the fight out of the Bulldogs as it was evident they had no answer to Ryle's scoring power. QB Duran Jefferson was played very well by the Raiders and was held to just 169 yards passing, he was also intercepted a total of three times. That said, Ryle would go on to score again early in the fourth quarter, this time it was RB Drew Morgan for a 38 yard scamper into the endzone, 34-7 Ryle. Ryle's last score would come off of a botched FG, that resulted in QB Jordan Brady scrambling and finding a wide open Dustin Huth for a 6 yard pass. Ryle finishes off Holmes by the score of 41-7.

Next week Ryle will take on the Boone County Rebels and Holmes will go against Simon Kenton Pioneers.
