Dream Season Cut Short
6/21/2011 - by Marlon Bray
The Newport Central Catholic boy’s baseball team had a historic season cut down just shy of perfection. On Saturday at Whitaker Bank Park, the Breds faced Pleasure Ridge Park in the Quarterfinals of the Kentucky State Baseball Tournament.

Vance Sullivan who came into the game with a record of 6-2 looked brilliant through the first four innings only yielding two runs. Trouble ensued however in the fifth where Sullivan walked two and hit another to load the bases for PRP. The Breds pitcher gave up four runs before getting out of the inning. Pleasant Ridge Park reliever Spencer Jones (8-2) gave the Panthers two and a third innings without giving up a hit. NewCath attempted to come back twice but in the end fell 10-4. NCC seniors Sean Murphy and Brian Doyle each went two for three at the plate.

PRP lost in the semifinals to Mercer County. Central Hardin then defeated Mercer County in the Championship game 21-2.

This year marks the deepest run in the baseball State Tournament for the Breds since 1976. The 2011 NCC baseball team also reached the All “A” Classic state tournament game and finished with a record of 26-10.
