A View From the Press Box

Northern Kentucky football fans, the final week of the regular season is here and there are only two games I want to touch on this week.

First, Ryle travels to Fort Thomas to face the Highlands Bluebirds. This game is going to be close for two quarters in my eyes. Highlands has too many weapons on offense. They showed us last week that they can win with Patrick Towles out of the line up. It took some time for the offense to adjust to the back up quarterback, Donovan McCoy, but within a few plays, it was Bluebird football hitting on all cylinders. Ryle, is coming off a tough win at Dixie, but Highlands is too deep for Ryle to handle. With that said, I applaud both coaches for keeping this game on the schedule and using it as tune up for the playoff season.

Bottom line: Highlands is just circling Western Kentucky University, waiting on ground clearance to land in the State Finals!

Now, to the Republic Bank High School Football “Game of the Week” live on NKYSPORTS.COM. This game needs very little build up. Click on the link below, to view how this game ended last year, and you will agree with me.

NewCath is coming to Fort Mitchell to settle some unfinished business from a year ago. I stand by my comments made during last year’s game. The two point conversation call by the official was the worst call I have ever seen to end a ballgame. Let the kids on the field determine the outcome. I give Beechwood head coach, Noel Rash, credit for going for the win, and his kids did nothing wrong on the play. It was one official that made a questionable call, change the outcome of a well played football game. I hope this year is different and the kids are the ones to decide the ballgame.

Beechwood enters the game missing a few key players on offense. That won’t matter. They are well coached and will be ready to play. Noel Rash, is one of the best coaches in the area, believe me when I say this, Beechwood is ready for NewCath.

NewCath is coming off a run of three games where they have played less than stellar football in the first half. They did finish all three games strong. I talked with head coach, Eddie Eviston, last night and I asked him what the focus was like in practice this week, he stated, “We had a good week of practice and I decided to go back to basics. We worked all week on tackling and I think we are prepared coming into this game. I know we struggled in the first half recently, but I think we have things where I want them to be. It comes down to the kids and how they are going to come out and play.”

Bottom line: Throw out injuries, schedules and anything else when these two teams meet each year. This is a toss up game. If there is such a thing as a good loss, this would be the case for both teams. As long as you can learn something from a loss, it is not the end of the world. I will debate anyone in the state that the state championship in both 1A and 2A, goes through these two teams. I also give credit to both coaches for keeping this game on the schedule each year. Northern Kentucky football would not be the same without these two teams ending the regular season.
