9th Region Girls All A Championship Game
1/25/2006 - by Brad Moore
The 2006 9th region girls All “A” championship game between Newport Central Catholic and Holy Cross left girls looking for ice packs as they left the gym. This was one of the more physical contests all season, and nobody was surprised at the fierce competition between the two rivals.

Holy Cross jumped out to an early 14-3 lead led by seniors Rachel Lantry and Katie Behrens. The ‘Breds answered back with a 16-4 run of their own to take a 19-18 lead midway through the second quarter. The Indians were then without sophomore guard Brooke Lantry, as she left the game with an injury late in the second quarter. The gym went silent as the younger Lantry was carried off by her coaching staff to the bench. Holy Cross responded to their fallen teammate to close the 1st half on a 12-2 run to take a 30-21 halftime lead.

The elder Lantry took the third quarter into her own hands, scoring the team’s first seven points on a pair of short jumpers and a three-point bomb that expanded the lead out to 14. Holy Cross maintained their double digit lead going in the fourth quarter, 40-28. The final stanza was two different styles of basketball as the 'Breds rushed up and down court looking for open lanes to score, as the Indians took care of the ball while running a weave at the top of the key to prevent NCC from getting the ball back. With the score 46-40, Lantry stepped to the line to knock down six consecutive free throws to put the game out of reach. Holy Cross held on to win 52-40 and will represent the 9th region at this year’s Girls All “A” State tournament. NewCath was led by Shannon Klei with 16 points along with Whitney Cundiff, who chipped in 13. The Indians were led by Lantry’s 22 as Behrens tossed in 15.

The Indians will play at 9:00 a.m on February 1st against the 11th region champion in the first round of the All “A” State Tournament. The 11th region tournament begins January 23.
