Simon Kenton Runs Away With Game at New Cath
Bryan Burke - The River City News
Friday night's game between Simon Kenton and Newport Central Catholic featured two teams spiraling in different directions. Simon Kenton came into the contest undefeated and scoring on a torrid pace. New Cath had yet to win and had been sputtering on the scoreboard. Those trends continued at Newport Stadium as the Pioneers thrashed the Thoroughbreds, 46-13.

NCC did a good deal to hurt itself with penalties and interceptions, but the most obvious difference from the sideline appeared to be team speed. Simon Kenton is very quick on the outside as their wideouts Logan Winkler and Logan Scott blazed around the edge all night on the Breds.

“They can run a little bit,” said Simon Kenton head coach Jeff Marksbury of his speedy receivers.

Winkler is especially talented with good straight-line speed, quickness in and out of his breaks and nice hands to go up and make contested grabs. He got the scoring started in the first quarter for the Pioneers as he took a wide-receiver bubble screen 46 yards to the house, racing down the sidelines and avoiding three ankle tackles in the process. A moment later, he took the ball on a direct snap and followed his lone blocker to the pylon, breaking the plane of the endzone to score the two-point conversion, putting his team up 8-0. They would not relinquish the lead all night. From there, they poured it on and the bottom fell out for Newport Central Catholic.
