Scott Advances to District Finals With Big Win Over Silver Grove
Jason Finnell - The River City News
Though bookended by sluggish first and fourth quarters, the Scott Eagles easily pulled away from Silver Grove, 68-28, Wednesday night in the opening round of the 37th District tournament at Campbell County Middle School.

Unable to consistently take advantage of the Big Trains’ turnovers early, Scott called timeout after Silver Grove pulled within two at 6-4, following junior guard Randy Kuntz’s bucket with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter. On their ensuing possession out of the timeout, Eagles’ sophomore guard Jake Ohmer hit a three to kickstart his team with a bit of momentum. Sophomore guard Vinnie Duimlao followed with two, and senior guard Blake Schneider’s steal and fast break transition basket increased the lead to nine. At the end of the quarter, Scott led 18-4 and began its streak of more consistent play for two quarters while Silver Grove wouldn’t score another point until three and a half minutes into the second.

Ohmer opened the quarter at the free throw line after he was fouled driving through the lane, adding to his team-high 23 points and a 23-4 lead. After a basket by junior guard Andrew Trame pushed the deficit to 26, the Big Trains called their second timeout of the half but to no avail as Scott’s lead only grew. At the break, the Eagles’ held a 41-12 advantage.

The third quarter began much like the second with contributions from Ohmer, Trame, senior guard Darian Witherspoon and a host of Eagles’ reserves. Senior guard Brenton Hughes joined his teammates with a few points as Scott blew the game wide open. At the end of the third, it was 64-18 but Scott would not score again for seven minutes.

Taking advantage of the dry spell, Silver Grove’s Christian Pollitt and Dylan Reilly contributed a few baskets of their own in addition to free throws by senior Billy Miller to bring the Big Trains’ point total to 28. With the clock winding down under a minute, sophomore forward Manny Allen added Scott’s lone bucket of the final quarter to give his team a 40-point margin of victory over Silver Grove to move on to the championship game of the 37th District vs. Campbell County, a 66-44 winner over Bishop Brossart in the second game of the tournament doubleheader at Campbell County Middle School.
