NCC, Newport Roll in 36th District Semifinals Round
Alex Valentine - The River City News
Newport Central Catholic and Highlands’ basketball programs are far from strangers. In the last fifteen 36th District tournaments, their paths have crossed thirteen times, including twelve District Championship match-ups. NCC has won eight of those thirteen district tournament battles with Highlands, including the last five.

In this rare first-round matchup, NCC controlled the game right from the tip. The Thoroughbreds came out applying full-court pressure to Highlands’ guards, forcing them to play at a faster and more frenetic pace than which they are accustomed.

Highlands turned the ball over seven times en route to digging themselves into a 23-2 deficit after one quarter. Junior forward Ben Weyer started the game matched up with Highlands’ leading scorer, Parker Harris. Weyer’s length made it extremely tough for Harris to gain any separation away from the ball.

Senior center Drew McDonald scored NCC’s first eight points of the second quarter, extending the lead 31-6 by the 5:00 mark. Senior guard Grant Pangallo converted a fast break layup as the clock expired in the first half, giving NCC a 46-11 lead at the break.

Weyer scored all eight of Newcath’s third quarter points, as NCC outscored Highlands 8-6 in the third period. Weyer finished the game with 12 points. The Thoroughbreds won the final quarter as well, 13-9, for a final score of 67-28.
